Zion, IL (December 28, 2025) – Authorities with the Zion Police Department have released an update related to the fatal pedestrian crash that took place in early November 2025.

This article follows up on a story covered earlier. You can read the original report here.

A woman charged in connection with a deadly pedestrian crash in Zion has been released from custody following a court hearing, according to court records. The case stems from a November 3, 2025, crash at the intersection of Sheridan Road and 33rd Street.

Zion police said a 2015 Ford Edge struck a pedestrian at approximately 5:46 p.m. The pedestrian, identified as 59-year-old Darren Lucas, died at the scene. Authorities stated the driver, Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, remained at the location and called 911 after the collision.

McCarty-Wroten was arrested earlier this week and charged with Reckless Homicide and Aggravated Use of an Electronic Communication Device. While she was initially ordered to remain in custody, court records show she was released after a preliminary hearing on Friday, December 26. The conditions of her release have not been disclosed.

Investigators began reviewing the case more closely after a video related to the crash surfaced on social media days later. Zion police confirmed their investigation revealed McCarty-Wroten was allegedly livestreaming on TikTok at the time of the crash. Authorities said the video was preserved and verified through search warrants and electronic data analysis.

McCarty-Wroten is scheduled to return to court on January 27. The investigation remains ongoing.

We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Darren Lucas.

Pedestrian Safety and Distracted Driving in Zion

Pedestrian crashes continue to be a serious concern throughout Lake County, particularly along busy roads such as Sheridan Road, where vehicle traffic and foot traffic frequently overlap. Evening hours can increase risks due to reduced visibility and heavier traffic volumes.

Distracted driving, including the use of mobile devices and social media, is a growing contributor to serious and fatal crashes nationwide. Even brief distractions can significantly reduce a driver’s ability to notice pedestrians or respond to roadway hazards in time to avoid a collision.

Illinois law restricts the use of electronic devices while driving, and violations that result in serious injury or death may lead to criminal charges and civil liability. Families affected by fatal pedestrian crashes often face emotional trauma alongside financial challenges, including funeral costs and the sudden loss of income or support.

In cases involving fatal pedestrian accidents, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. These claims can help address medical expenses, funeral costs, and loss of companionship while also promoting accountability for unsafe driving behavior.

Legal cases involving distracted driving can be complex, particularly when electronic evidence and crash reconstruction are involved. Legal guidance may help families understand their options and navigate the process during a difficult and emotional time.

A skilled wrongful death attorney can help families understand their rights and pursue compensation for wrongful death, medical bills, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and other losses.
