Fox Lake, IL (March 15, 2026) – This update follows our earlier report on the fatal incident. You can read the original coverage here.
Authorities have identified the man who died after being rescued from a condominium fire earlier this week in Fox Lake.
Emergency crews responded around 7:12 a.m. on Monday, March 10, to the 0–100 block of St. Thomas Colony Street after receiving reports of a structure fire at the Vacation Village community.
According to officials, a person at the location called 911 to report smoke and flames coming from an end unit of a two-story, multi-family building.
While searching the residence, firefighters located an adult male inside the unit and removed him from the building. Paramedics transported the victim to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry in critical condition.
The McHenry County Coroner later identified the victim as Jason Binzel, 52, of Fox Lake, who lived in the condominium where the fire occurred. Despite lifesaving efforts, Binzel was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators determined that the fire began in the kitchen on the first floor of the unit, though the exact cause remains under investigation.
Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Jason Binzel as they face this difficult time.
What Happens After a Fatal Residential Fire in Illinois?
After a fatal residential fire in Illinois, fire investigators typically begin a detailed examination of the scene to determine how the blaze started and how it spread throughout the structure.
Investigators from local fire departments may work alongside fire marshals, law enforcement, and other specialists to examine burn patterns, electrical systems, appliances, and other potential ignition sources. These inspections can take time, particularly when significant structural damage has occurred.
Officials often document the scene carefully, photographing the damage and collecting evidence that may help identify the origin and cause of the fire. In many cases, investigators also review witness statements, emergency call records, and building safety features such as smoke alarms, fire extinguishers, and sprinkler systems.
When a fire results in a death, investigators may also review whether building conditions, electrical failures, defective appliances, or other hazards played a role. In some situations, insurance companies conduct their own assessments to evaluate property damage and determine coverage under homeowner or renter policies.
Families affected by a fatal fire often face many difficult questions in the days and weeks that follow. Issues involving insurance claims, property damage, medical expenses, and funeral costs can arise while loved ones are still processing the loss.
Because of this, some families choose to speak with a lawyer to better understand their legal rights and available options. An attorney can help explain how fire-related claims are typically handled, whether liability may be involved, and what types of compensation may be available to help cover losses resulting from the incident.
A skilled Lake County premises liability lawyer can help families understand their rights and pursue compensation for wrongful death, medical bills, funeral expenses, pain and suffering, and other losses.
